Rejuvenation Pruning

Neglected bushespruning roses 2 often require extensive shrub trimming to make them attractive again. This is where rejuvenation pruning becomes necessary. Rejuvenation pruning is the calculated, artistic way of reducing the size of overgrown shrubs by pruning more than the usual or standard amount. Besides reducing the size of a plant, Rejuvenation pruning can also re-vitalize the growth on a stagnant shrub, increase blooms the following year, and develop a thicker, healthier plant.

When To Trim Shrubs

Shrub trimming should occur for most shrubs twice during the spring and late summer months, when growth is rampant.   Some shrubs do require more than two trimmings per year, such as formal hedges and topiaries. There are also shrubs that should only be trimmed once per season to promote following year blooms. The spring trimming in the most important trimming for stimulating new branches and filling in the shape of your shrubs. Timing of pruning is a big consideration, for example, pruning a spring-flowering shrub, such as a lilac, during the dormant season or late fall will reduce the amount of blooms the plant produces. Generally, It’s usually best to prune spring-flowering shrubs shortly after blooming period ends.

Pruning Formal Hedges

There is something visually appealing about a healthy, well maintained hedge. A symmetrical wall of green creates visualTrimming Formal Hedge and physical limits in the landscape and provides a softer, more pleasing effect than wood, metal or plastic fencing materials. Hedges are an effective backdrop for flower beds and borders or may stand on their own in a diversity of shapes and sizes.

Formal hedges are beautiful when well kept, but if they are not properly maintained they may become overgrown or poorly-shaped. Maintaining a formal hedge is time-consuming and requires proper pruning techniques. First, pruning must be done regularly to maintain the desired shape. Second, it is important to shape a formal hedge so that it is narrower at the top than at the bottom. A pyramidal shape allows the lower branches and leaves to receive the sunlight that is required to produce a dense, full hedge from top to bottom. Finally, it is important to know the natural growth habit and height of the shrub species. It may require several prunings to keep a tall plant maintained at a shorter level. The best time of the year for pruning most hedges is in the spring, but many need to be pruned 2-4 times during the growing season.

To avoid thinning out the bottom of hedges, a technique called beveling must be used. Beveling is where you bevel the top of the hedge narrower than the bottom, allowing the sides of the hedge to protrude at a slight angle. This prevents the top of the hedge from blocking sunlight to the bottom of the hedge resulting in thinning at the bottom.
